First Friday is Historic Downtown Bryan's monthly street event, held on the first Friday of every month from 5 to 10 pm. For about twenty years it has turned the Main Street blocks into an open-air evening of live music, performances, art demonstrations, food vendors, and open shops, with galleries and boutiques staying open past their usual hours. It is free to walk into and built for browsing on foot.

On the street it runs as a family event. West End Elixir is the grown-up corner of that same block: a 21-and-up cocktail and whisky bar a few steps off the music, open every night, evenings to close. First Friday is the city's event, not ours, so the bar keeps no special First Friday programming. It is simply open, the way it is every night.

There are two easy ways to fold West End into a First Friday. Come early, before the street fills, and take a stool for a slow first drink while the block sets up. Or let First Friday run its course, wander the vendors and the music, and use the bar as the last stop when the street lights go down at ten.

The bar is at 107 S Main Street, on Main Street inside the First Friday footprint, a short walk from the LaSalle Hotel and the Queen Theatre. From the Texas A&M campus and Kyle Field it is about ten minutes and five miles by car, so a friend driving in from College Station lands downtown without fighting stadium traffic.

Inside is one ground-floor room: a long bar, leather chairs, low light. About a hundred cocktails on the menu, built on house-made syrups and fat-washed spirits, and about a hundred whiskies on the shelf across bourbon, rye, Scotch, Irish, and Japanese, poured neat, on the rocks, or in a drink.

If you want a place to start, the house Old Fashioned is $14 and the bacon fat-washed Old Fashioned is $14. The rest of the cocktail menu rewards a sentence about how you feel over a drink name, and the whiskey shelf runs from the everyday brown to the bottles you ask about by name. A First Friday is a good night to try the second thing you would not usually order.

First Friday on the street is a family event; the adult end of the evening is the cigar lounge at the back of the bar. If you are 21 or over, it is open during regular hours: a humidor cabinet, leather chairs, and a bartender who will walk you through choosing a first cigar if you are new to it. A cigar adds an unhurried hour once the vendors pack up.

Nobody needs to be a regular to sit down in it. Regulars who turn it into a standing night keep a private bottle-and-cigar locker on the back wall through membership, but a walk-in can light something mild and let the night run long just the same.

The whole point of First Friday is that it happens on foot. The Main Street blocks are walkable, so the vendors, the music, a bite from a truck, and a drink at the bar all connect without moving the car. West End sits a short walk from the LaSalle Hotel and the Queen Theatre, both on the same downtown run, so a film on the Queen's board or a browse through the shops folds into the same evening.
